Overview

Travel with a purpose! This may be the most economical, life-changing experience out there! Consider a vacation combining volunteering and tourism that will enrich your life as well as the lives of others. It’s a mix of social action, education, and cultural immersion. We are looking for volunteers to share their teaching expertise! For three weeks you will work with a host teacher delivering lessons to the students of Dekpor Basic School, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. In the afternoons there are opportunities to tutor; run an activity or club: go on tours of local markets, places of interest, shrines, and nearby beaches; participate in drumming and dancing lessons; engage in cultural discussions or take cooking lessons. Early evenings you will have a chance to interact with students on a personal basis or visit local families to learn about traditional cultures and ways of life. Get ready to journey off the beaten path for an adventure like no other!

Day 01 Arrive Accra

You will be met at Katoka International Airport. After a brief orientation, you will be transported to the hotel in Accra for the night.

Day 02 Accra – Dekpor

In the morning, you will change money, visit the Arts Centre, and then be transported to Dekpor in an air conditioned passenger van.
Your village home is somewhat primitive by western standards. It is an upgraded, but typical village home where you will be welcomed and treated as family for the duration of your stay. Life in the village, other than teaching and sleeping, takes place outdoors. Dekpor Basic School houses kindergarten through junior secondary school—a total of 11 grades. You will work closely with a local teacher to deliver literacy and math lessons during vacation ‘summer’ school. Books and teaching ideas are provided, but your input is welcomed to ensure a positive experience for both you and the students. Villagers speak the tribal language, Ewe, as their first language; English is their second language.

Days 03 – 07 Dekpor

Teaching in the morning. Tutoring, lessons, or tours in the afternoon.

Day 08 Drive to Keta

Keta is an old colonial town famous for its salt ponds and sandy beaches. Visit ruins of an old slave fort and then it’s off to the beach! You can sunbathe, swim, or watch the fishermen at work. Today is an opportunity to relax and socialize.

Day 09 Visit Shrine

Dive into the culture! Visit a fetish shrine and learn about the old religions that are still practiced in Ghana. Drumming, dancing, and animal sacrifices are part of their rituals and can be observed. Your questions about this traditional religion will be answered by locals.

Days 10 – 14 Dekpor

Teaching in the morning. Tutoring, lessons, or tours in the afternoons.

Day 15 Tafe Atome Monkey Sanctuary
