Day-01  Arrive at Keflavik Airport (early morning arrival)

Reykjavik – Short Driving Tour – Sky Lagoon

Upon arrival, proceed through immigration, retrieve your luggage, and exit the airport lounge. Keep an eye out for the individual holding the Off The Map Adventures sign. You will be connected with your guide, who will assist you in transferring your luggage to the designated transport, and together, you will embark on the journey to Reykjavik. The drive is estimated to take about an hour. Our first destination in Reykjavik is a local café, where we’ll enjoy breakfast (not included). After fueling up, we’ll join our driver for an interesting bus tour. Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital and largest city, enchants visitors with its harmonious blend of modern urban flair and natural splendor. A scenic drive along the waterfront treats us to awe-inspiring views of the surrounding mountains and the iconic Harpa Concert Hall, a masterpiece of contemporary architecture. Notable landmarks on our route include the uniquely designed Hallgrímskirkja Church. As we continue our drive, we’ll pass by Perlan (the Pearl), a distinctive building crowned with a remarkable glass dome atop six hot water tanks. Our leisurely journey eventually leads us to our ultimate destination, the Sky Lagoon, for an authentic Icelandic geothermal experience. Your tour package grants access through the “Pure Entrance,” featuring a seven-step ritual. The Sky Lagoon boasts warm geothermal waters enriched with minerals, sourced from natural hot springs beneath the Earth’s surface. After immersing yourself in the ultimate Icelandic experience, it’s time to check in to your hotel. Take the opportunity to get some well-deserved rest.

Meals included today: None.

Tips for the day: We recommend keeping your bathing/swimwear in your carry-on, as we’ll be visiting the Sky Lagoon before checking into the hotel.

Day-02, Reykjavik – Borgafjörður – Settlement Center – Grábrók – Deildatunguhver

Hraunfossar – Barnafossar – Reykholt

After breakfast, head out to Borgarfjörður Fjord, known for its scenic beauty, with mountains, hot springs, and historical sites in the surrounding area. The region is also home to the town of Borgarnes, situated at the inland end of the fjord, which serves as a gateway to the Borgarfjörður area. Visitors to Borgarfjörður can explore natural wonders, as well as historical sites such as the Settlement Center in Borgarnes, providing insights into Iceland’s early history.

The Settlement Center consists of two main exhibitions:

  1. The Settlement Exhibition: This exhibition showcases the Viking Age and the early settlement of Iceland. You can explore interactive displays, artifacts, and multimedia presentations that bring to life the challenges and stories of the early settlers.
  1. Egil’s Saga Exhibition: Egil’s Saga is one of the most famous sagas in Icelandic literature, detailing the life and adventures of the warrior-poet Egill Skallagrímsson. The exhibition at the Settlement Center delves into the characters and events of this saga, providing a deeper understanding of Icelandic medieval literature and history.

We continue our drive through the landscape around Grábrók, characterized by extensive lava fields, a remnant of past volcanic activity. The contrast between the rugged lava terrain and the green moss that often covers it creates a visually striking scene. Grábrók is a volcanic crater located in the western part of Iceland, specifically in the region of Borgarfjörður. It is part of a volcanic fissure that formed around 3,000 years ago, during the last major eruption in this area. There is a well-maintained trail that leads to the top of Grábrók, allowing visitors to explore the crater and its rim. The hike is relatively short, making it accessible to a wide range of visitors, including those with moderate fitness levels.

Next, stop is Deildartunguhver, a powerful hot spring in Iceland and is considered one of the most prolific thermal springs in Europe in terms of water flow.

A thirty minute drive will bring us to Hraunfossar, a unique and picturesque series of waterfalls, known for their distinctive appearance and geological origin. What makes Hraunfossar particularly fascinating is the way the waterfalls seemingly emerge directly from the lava fields. The water flows out from beneath the Hallmundarhraun lava field, creating a stunning scene where the falls appear to seep directly out of the porous rock. The water that forms Hraunfossar originates from the Langjökull glacier, which is located further inland. It travels through the porous lava fields, eventually emerging at the surface to create the series of cascades. Situated in the Hvítá River, not far from Hraunfossar, Barnafoss is another series of waterfalls emerging from the Hallmundarhraun lava field. The name “Barnafoss” translates to “Children’s Falls” in Icelandic. Ask your guide to elaborate where the name comes from. Near Barnafoss, we have the option to visit a local stable.

If you are interested in a horse ride, the cost of this optional ride is: US$ 90 dollars person.

Finally we arrive at Reykholt, renowned for its historical and cultural importance. It was a significant center of education, literature, and politics during the medieval period in Iceland. The most famous resident of Reykholt was Snorri Sturluson, a 13th-century historian, politician, and author of many Icelandic sagas, including the Prose Edda.

Day-04 Snæfellsnes Peninsula – Kirkjufell – Arnarstapi – Vatnshellir – Thu Hellnar – Búðir Church

After breakfast this morning, we will embark on an exciting adventure to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, a captivating region located on the western coast of Iceland. Known for its diverse landscapes, dramatic coastline, and the prominent Snæfellsjökull volcano to the west of the peninsula, it is often referred to as “Iceland in Miniature.” The accessibility of the peninsula and its wealth of natural wonders make it a popular destination for those exploring the beauty of Iceland’s western coast. Here on the peninsula, we will visit Kirkjufell, meaning “Church Mountain.” Known for its unique and symmetrical shape, it is one of the most recognizable mountains in Iceland, boasting an iconic silhouette with a pointed peak and steep slopes. At the base of Kirkjufell flows Kirkjufellsfoss, a waterfall that complements the mountain’s beauty. This waterfall is a popular photography spot, and the combination of the mountain and cascading water creates stunning views.

A stop at Arnarstapi allows us to experience a typical picturesque coastal village in Iceland. Although remote, Arnarstapi has some unique attractions, such as:

Gatklettur Arch: Gatklettur, which translates to “Hole Rock” in Icelandic, is a notable rock formation and natural arch not far from the village. The arch has been shaped by the sea and provides a stunning backdrop against the ocean.

Bárður Snæfellsás Statue: A mythical half-man, half-troll figure from Icelandic folklore stands near the harbor. The statue adds a touch of local mythology and cultural richness to the village.

Arnarstapi Arch: Another geological feature worth noting is the natural stone arch near the village. Shaped by volcanic activity and erosion, the arch is a fascinating sight.

We can make a stop at the site of Vatnshellir. For those interested in exploring the inside of a cave, there is an option to do so at an additional cost.

Optional Tour of Vatnshellir Cave – US$ 40 per person.

The cave provides a glimpse into Iceland’s dramatic volcanic history. Inside, you can witness historical evidence of volcanic activity spanning thousands of years, including layers of solidified lava and various volcanic rock formations. Observe the diverse formations, such as stalactites and stalagmites. The cave’s walls showcase different colors and textures, revealing the fascinating geological processes that occurred during the lava flow.

Búðir is our last stop on the way back to Reykholt. Here, we will visit the famous Búðir Church. The church is a wooden structure with a distinctive black exterior, creating a striking contrast against the surrounding landscape. While the original Búðir Church was built in the 17th century, it was unfortunately destroyed in a storm in 1703. The current church is a reconstruction that was completed in 1848. Despite its relatively small size, Búðir Church holds historical significance.

Meals included today: Breakfast & Dinner.

Day-05 Golden Circle Fri Þingvellir National Park – Fontana Bakery – Geysir – Gullfoss Waterfalls– Friðheimar

After breakfast, get ready to explore the Golden Circle of Iceland. Known for its diverse and stunning natural attractions including three of the most iconic sites in the country.

We will start with a visit to the Þingvellir National Park (Thingvellir): This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a historic site where Iceland’s parliament, Alþingi, was established in 930 AD. It is one of the world’s oldest parliaments and was held annually in an outdoor assembly until 1798. Thingvellir is also geologically significant, as it is situated on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. Þingvellir National Park combines natural beauty, historical importance, and geological wonder, making it a must-visit destination for those exploring Iceland’s diverse landscapes.

We make a short stop at Laugarvatn for a unique Geothermal Baking experience. One of the distinctive features of Fontana Geothermal Bakery is its use of geothermal heat to bake bread. The bakery takes advantage of the natural hot springs in the area to create a traditional Icelandic rye bread. The bread is placed in special containers and buried in the hot sand by the lake, where it slowly bakes over the course of 24 hours.

Our next stop is at Geysir, a renowned geothermal area that has lent its name to the term “geyser” worldwide. The Great Geysir, after which all other geysers are named, is not as active as it once was, but nearby Strokkur steals the show by erupting every 5-10 minutes, sending a powerful column of hot water and steam into the air. The geothermal field is characterized by vibrant thermal pools, bubbling mud pots, and hissing steam vents, creating a surreal and otherworldly landscape. You can witness the result of the dynamic forces beneath the Earth’s surface, where the relentless energy of Iceland’s geothermal activity is on dramatic display. Our next stop is at Gullfoss, or the “Golden Falls”, a spectacular two-tiered waterfall situated on the Hvítá River. Renowned for its breathtaking beauty and raw power, Gullfoss captivates visitors as it plunges into a deep canyon with immense force. The name “Golden Falls” is fitting, as on sunny days, the mist from the waterfall can create shimmering rainbows in the sunlight. Its awe-inspiring scale and the thunderous roar of cascading water make Gullfoss a must-visit natural wonder, offering a profound connection to Iceland’s untamed and majestic landscapes. Our final stop is at Friðheimar’s greenhouse which offers visitors a unique and immersive experience into the world of sustainable agriculture. The greenhouse environment allows for year-round tomato production using geothermal heating, showcasing the country’s innovative approach to harnessing natural resources for farming. The visit of the greenhouse gives a great insight into the cultivation process, the significance of geothermal energy in Iceland’s agriculture, and the challenges of growing produce in a northern climate. The on-site restaurant provides an opportunity to savor a meal amid the thriving tomato plants, with a menu featuring a variety of tomato-based dishes. Friðheimar’s commitment to sustainable farming practices and its educational approach makes it an interesting stop to see sustainable agriculture in action.

Day-06, Friðheimar – Lava Centre – Skógafoss – Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach – Vík

After breakfast this morning, we will start with a visit to the nearby Lava Center, featuring interactive and multimedia exhibits that provide information about Iceland’s volcanic and seismic activity. Visitors can explore the geological processes that have shaped the island, including volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and the formation of lava fields. Our next stop is to another iconic waterfall. Skógafoss is a mesmerizing waterfall situated along the Skógá River in southern Iceland. Renowned for its majestic beauty and thundering cascade, Skógafoss plunges approximately 60 meters (200 feet) from an ancient sea cliff, creating a spectacular curtain of mist and rainbows. Skógafoss is framed by lush greenery and surrounded by a landscape rich in folklore. Legend has it that a Viking settler, Thrasi Þórólfsson, buried a treasure chest behind the waterfall, and visitors can ascend a staircase alongside the falls for a panoramic view of the surrounding plains and the South Coast.

Our next stop is renowned for its unique and striking features: Reynisfjara Beach is characterized by its dramatic basalt sea stacks rising from the ocean, known as Reynisdrangar. The basalt columns are primarily formed from lava flows. When lava erupts and flows, it encounters the cooler air and water. As the lava cools rapidly, it contracts and solidifies into hexagonal or pentagonal columns, a phenomenon known as columnar jointing. This creates the distinctive geometric shapes seen in basalt formations.

The black volcanic sand, a result of Iceland’s volcanic activity, adds to the beach’s mysterious and otherworldly ambiance. Powerful waves from the North Atlantic Ocean crash onto the shore, creating a dynamic and awe-inspiring scene. Visitors can explore the basalt columns, caves, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding cliffs. However, the beach is known for its powerful waves and strong currents, and caution is advised. Reynisfjara stands as a testament to Iceland’s geological wonders and offers a visually stunning and atmospheric experience for those who venture to its shores.

On our way to our hotel for the night, we will pass through Vik, a charming coastal village nestled along Iceland’s South Coast, set against a backdrop of rugged cliffs and black sand beaches. Vik is renowned for its iconic church, which sits atop a hill overlooking the village and offers stunning views of the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mýrdalsjökull glacier-capped Katla volcano looming in the distance.

Skaftafell serves as a hub for exploring the surrounding glacial expanses, including the famous Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and the contrasting black sand beaches of the Diamond Beach. With its rich biodiversity and dynamic landscapes. The lagoon is formed by the melting of Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet glacier of the massive Vatnajökull, and is renowned for its surreal beauty. Glacial icebergs break off from the glacier, float in the lagoon, and slowly drift towards the Atlantic Ocean. The icebergs come in various shapes and sizes, displaying hues of blue and white. The striking contrast between the floating ice and the surrounding black sand beach, known as Diamond Beach, adds to the lagoon’s allure.

After an exciting day, we will be heading back to our hotel.

Meals included today: Breakfast & Dinner.

Day-08 Núpar – Eldhraun Lava field – Seljalandsfoss – Reykjavík

After breakfast, we will start our journey back to Reykjavík. Our trip will take us across the Eldhraun Lava Fields. Eldhraun meaning “Fire Lava,”. This is a vast and ethereal lava field, near the town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Formed during the Laki volcanic eruption in 1783, Eldhraun is one of the largest lava fields in the world, covering an expansive area with moss-covered lava rock formations.
